Bald Eagles at Squamish B.C.

It is that time of year for North America’s largest annual congregation of wintering bald eagles at Squamish river in British Columbia. For nature lovers, it is an easy and rewarding destination. Located on the Sea-to-Sky Highway, Squamish is conveniently located about an hour north of Vancouver, BC.

When and Where to See Eagles

Between November and January each year, thousands of eagles arrive in Squamish. They arrive from Alaska and Canada to feed on salmon. It is not uncommon to see 20 to 50 eagles at one time. We have visited twice, both times during the first week of December. We have not been disappointed. There are great viewing spots throughout Squamish … all within minutes of each other. The best viewing locations are near the river. For those not paying attention … that is where the salmon tend to be.

Eagles Up Close

There are some isolated spots on small tributary streams away from the ‘marked’ viewing locations which are spectacular. In these small forested alcoves, the majestic nature of these raptors is enhanced by the constant sound of eagles screeching at each other. Feeling the wind from the wings of an eagle fly just over head is awesome. Although, a close watch may be warranted for small pets and children, at least those that you want to keep. To combat the cooler temperatures, I recommend a large thermos of hot chocolate. A smoked salmon bagel might be tempting fate.

Squamish

The short drive to Squamish makes it an easy day trip from Vancouver. However, to truly enjoy the spectacle … don’t rush. Stay the night in Squamish. There are several options. We opted for the Executive Suites Hotel & Resort. For an even closer view of the eagles, several companies also operate float trips down the river, including Canadian Outback Rafting which we took last year and the Squamish Rafting Company. You can find out more about the eagles at the Squamish tourist website. To see more of my photos of the eagles, click on this link to visit the gallery on my website
