All This Ice and No Gin and Tonic ?

Last week we stumbled across the 2022 World Ice Art Championships in Fairbanks Alaska. This is an annual event with competitors from all around the world. Some of these sculptures are absolutely huge and the level of detail is extraordinary. Here is a link to a video on YouTube from last year’s event which will give you some insight into the size of these sculptures … as well as how they are made.

The sculptures are spread among a wooded area and lit quite dramatically. We went at dusk, to get the whole effect. In hindsight, maybe not such a good idea. After several sleepless nights out chasing the Northern Lights until 3:00am and drinking ample amounts of hot chocolate to stay warm … I was pretty sure a few of those sculptures started to follow us around the dark woods.

If you are looking for a unique winter adventure, Fairbanks has a lot to offer. This event should absolutely be on your agenda. There are also a bunch of different slides and games all made out of ice for the kids or the “kids at heart” so dress warm and channel your inner Randy Parker (“I can’t get my arms down !”).
